The Oliver and District Heritage Society operates a museum and archive facility in the picturesque and historic community of Oliver, B.C. – Wine Capital of Canada!

Nestled between mature forested mountains and located at the northern tip of the Sonoran Desert the South Okanagan landscape consists of a complex array of habitats – our region supports one of the most diverse assemblages of species in Canada, many of which are not found elsewhere in the country.

The Museum, which is housed in a unique heritage building offers several galleries that tell the story of Oliver's development from semi-arid desert to the flourishing agricultural oasis it is today. Step back in time by entering the Fairview jail, one of the few remaining intact buildings from our gold mining past.

Discover Oliver's rich and fascinating history by visiting the Archive facility which is considered a model for community archives and boasts a large comfortable reading area and public reference library. Holdings relate to the history and development of the South Okanagan and consist of records pertaining to local individuals, families, business groups, organizations, clubs etc.

Our Gift Shoppe is located in the Archive building. We carry a variety of books relating to the local history of the area as well as a wonderful selection of vibrant Fruit box labels; our ever popular historical DVD Add Water and Stir: A brief history of Oliver, B.C.; Fairview TeePee Hotel collector spoons, and much more.

We also offer photograph reproductions from our 7000+ photograph collection.

Nk'Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course

P: 250-498-2880

There is no one word that describes Nk’Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course in Oliver. Centuries before the course was created the Okanagan people who lived here had formed an affinity with the canyons, the game, the wind, and the water that nurtured their lives and added dimension to this region of the valley. They referred to the area as “Nk’Mip” (Inkameep) whose English meaning roughly translates as “flat bottom land at the mouth of the creek or river”. However the translation lacks the imagery of their language. The Okanagan saw land in terms of pictures that went deeper than words and when you see the Nk’Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course you will understand why.

Located in the Okanagan’s premier grape region, Gehringer Brothers is nestled in the heart of the well-known Golden Mile area south of Oliver.  It is tucked in among several neighbouring wineries, overlooking an expanse of vineyard and orchards as far as Osoyoos Lake. The vineyard’s southeast aspect and gentle slopes give the vines excellent exposure to sunshine, while the elevated location on the bench keeps the vines safely above the Fall frost zone. The high mountain slopes behind the vineyards to the west provide evening shade, resulting in a rapid cool-off during summer, which is turn prevents the grape acids from dropping. That is what shapes the Gehringer style: a fine balance between ripe, sweet fruit and firm, clean acidity.

Hidden Chapel Winery

9756 382nd Ave, Oliver, BC, V0H 1T0

Src=images/stories/hiddenchapel.jpghiddenchapelP: 250-490-6000

We are small & quaint. Our wines are created hands-on by the owners, Lanny Kinrade & Deborah Wilde with the help of family & friends, in small quantities for quality control. We believe great wine is an expression of the area it comes from…it’s grown, not made. A combination of soil, sun, vine & man, our wine begins with its roots deep within the sandy loam of the northern tip of the Great-Basin Desert. It is then ripened by the hot Okanagan sun and finally aged in our unique underground cellar, which is overlooked by the Hidden Chapel. Our old Italian relatives claim that legend has it, our wines are blessed by the Hidden Chapel…tasting is believing!

Noble Ridge Vineyard & Winery

2320 Oliver Ranch Road., OK Falls, BC, V0H 1R2

Src=images/stories/nobleridge.jpgnobleridgeP: 250-497-7945

Noble Ridge Vineyard & Winery is nestled in the northern tip of a pocket desert in the southern Okanagan Valley in beautiful British Columbia. The prominent feature of the original 10-hectare (24-acre) property is an east-west ridge bisecting the vineyard, providing southern and northern facing slopes. The name of the vineyard is inspired by the ridge and by the noble grape varieties being grown. The southern slopes, with greater exposure to the sun, are ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties, which were initially planted in 1986. In 2001, Pinot Noir was also planted. The northern slopes are planted with white varieties – Pinot Gris and Chardonnay – which thrive on the slightly cooler side of the ridge. A 4-hectare (10 acre) property adjoining Noble Ridge - "Noble Ridge North" - was purchased in July 2006 bringing the total acreage to 14-hectares (35 acres). 3 acres were planted to Chardonnay and 3 acres were planted to Merlot in 2000.  One acre of Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in 2005. 250 plants of Malbec were planted in 2009.

River Stone Estate Winery

RR2 S5 C18, Oliver, BC, V0H 1T0

Src=images/stories/riverstone.jpgriverstoneP: 250-498-7798

River Stone is a small, family owned and operated winery located in the South Okanagan. We are located on a small knoll in the middle of the valley, just south of the well recognized McIntyre Bluff and just north of Oliver, BC, the Wine Capital of Canada. The winery site is surrounded by our hand tended vineyard. When we moved to the Okanagan Valley we chose this site for its superb grape-growing qualities and planted the vineyard with a Bordeaux style blend in mind, which we have called Corner Stone. As our winery name, River Stone, and vineyard name, River Rock Vineyards suggest, our wines come from the deep rock and gravel soils laid down following the last glacial recession. We grow four red Bordeaux varietals; Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec as well as two white varietals; Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. Long sunlit summer days followed by fall's warm days and cool nights have consistently produced premium quality fruit.

Src=images/stories/road_13_logo1.jpgroad_13_logo1P: 250-498-8330

The wine making philosophy is to grow great fruit in the vineyard, maintain this fruit character through careful steps in the wine making, and finally, to perfect the texture of the mouthfeel of the wine with the use (or not) of barrels and fining. Great wines are grown in the vineyard, period. Grapes brought in from the vineyard at a certain level of quality cannot be made into a higher quality wine. Thus, we use good growing practices and low cropping yields to ensure that the vines and fruits receive the correct amount of sunshine, water and nutrients to put them in a position to make great wine. We like to use oak barrels. All reds and certain whites are aged in oak barrels for varying lengths of time, looking for the perfect balance between fruit intensity and oak extraction. While the taste and effect of oak barrel aging are pleasing, they should never dominate the fruit flavour of the wine but rather complement it.

On a hillside overlooking vineyards, sagebrush, and the old gold mining creek that is its namesake, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has been owned and operated by the Shaunessy and Oldfield families since 1993. The winery is located south of Oliver, BC, at the junction of Highway 97 and Road 7 in the famed Golden Mile wine-growing district. This area, named for its rich history of farming that dates back to the early 1900s, is home to several quality wine producers. Tinhorn Creek sources fruit exclusively from its own vineyards: 150 acres of prime land on two very distinct benches. This land lends to the creation of terroir-driven wines that are classic illustrations of the place they are grown. The 100-acre Diamondback Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench is planted with a mix of red and white varieties, primarily Pinot Gris, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 50-acre Tinhorn Creek Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench is also planted with a mix of red and white grapes, but primarily features Gewürztraminer.

Wild Goose was established in June 1990 when the first production of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Marechal Foch hit the marketplace. The consumer quickly grasped onto the concept of small wineries. Visit the valley, spend some time on the beach, play a little golf, and tour wineries. In no time at all Wild Goose began reeling in new customers, people who enjoyed wines, touring, and visiting with the Kruger family. Over the years Wild Goose would establish itself as one of the premium small producers of VQA wines in British Columbia.
